The Transformation

If you happen to pay any attention to the celebrity world, you probably already know about the whole Joaquin Phoenix “transformation” from actor to rapper. The whole process has been a little strange from the beginning, but Phoenix’s appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman last night topped the cake.

The appearance, in promotion for his final movie, Two Lovers, might be the most bizarre interview I’ve ever seen. Some have suggested that Joaquin is/was under the influence of drugs during this interview. But others think that the talented man was just acting to draw media buzz to himself and his new career. Here’s the video… hopefully CBS doesn’t remove it from YouTube like they have all the others:

Edit: Here is the only video that has not been removed from YouTube because CBS themselves uploaded it. Unfortunately, it’s not the full interview.

I tend to think the whole thing was fake. Either that or the man is going through more of a transition than I thought… mentally. I can’t help being reminded of oddball Andy Kaufman during this interview.

What do you think about this story? I’d love to hear your opinion.

Um. Wow. This makes me sick or sad, or both. Can’t decide. What has happened to my boyfriend?!

  2. Cheryl Says:

I can only hope he’s acting!

Btw, I’ve become a fan of your blog lately but you don’t post enough! You really should blog more often.

  3. Sam Says:

@ Cheryl: You have no idea how many times I’ve heard that! Perhaps I shall make it a post-New Year’s resolution.

    Thanks for the kind words.

  4. Rat Fink Says:

If this isn’t an Andy Kaufman replay, I will be surprised.

  5. Sam Says:

@ Rat Fink: I second that.

  6. lenleez Says:

duh stop saying he’s acting he’s not acting! it’s obvious the dude is going crazy and needs some help. and all this interview does is show how incredibly rude david letterman is.

  7. Sam Says:

@ lenleez: It’s only my opinion that he’s acting. I could be wrong and so could you. And for the record, I stated that Joaquin might also be “going through more of a transition than I thought… mentally.” Did you read that part?

Also, David Letterman is at his comedic best during this interview. Joaquin Phoenix barely uttered a word and Letterman repeatedly told him that he was only joking and to relax. David Letterman is a comedic talk-show host… poking fun at guests is his job. Besides, he was trying to make the best out of an undoubtedly awkward situation.

  8. Joe Says:

it’s hard to tell whether Joaquin Phoenix was faking it or not during that Letterman interview, especially since he’s such a talented actor…

Don’t ask me about the little clip afterwards though… *shrugs*

  11. Sam Says:

@ KC: Haha, I’ve actually seen that clip before. I think it’s from an old SNL appearance.

By the way, have you seen Jim Carrey’s impression of Kaufman? He does an excellent job, which is to be expected.

  12. KC Says:

Yeah, I’ve seen clips of it. They’re from the movie Man on the Moon, which I’ve decided I really need to see.

Almost 2 months without a post…tsk, tsk, tsk. Samuel, Samuel.
